DES MOINES - The Audubon County Emergency Management Agency, Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEMD), and the National Weather Service (NWS) have joined together to promote Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa.

Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 27-31, is an opportunity to highlight the importance of being aware of, and prepared for, severe weather.

Audubon County Emergency Management and the County's public safety partners urge everyone to participate in Severe Weather Awareness Week in order to be better prepared for severe weather events coming our way this spring. For each day during Severe Weather Awareness Week, a different subject will be featured:

• Monday- Severe thunderstorms. Hundreds of severe thunderstorms hit Iowa each year. Did you know severe thunderstorms can be as dangerous as tornadoes?
• Tuesday-Weather warnings. Over the years, the ways to get hazardous weather warnings have changed. In addition to traditional warning methods, Audubon County also offers "Alert Iowa". (More information is available below.)
• Wednesday- Tornadoes. In 2011, over 500 people died in the United States from tornadoes! Do you know where the safest place is in your home or car?
• Thursday- Family preparedness. Learn about family safety from natural and man-made hazards. In addition to information about Severe Weather Awareness Week, safety tips and sample plans to help keep you and your family safe can be found at www.berady.iowa.gov. Click on the "Be Prepared" link on the left.
• Friday- Flash floods. Flash flooding is the most deadly weather threat in the United States. Never drive into a flooded area!

The annual tornado drill will take place on Wed., March 29, at approximately 10 a.m. Schools, businesses, state and local governments, the military, and individuals are strongly encouraged to participate in the drill. Additional information about the tornado drill can be found on local NWS Websites.

Fact sheets about severe weather will be available on both the NWS and Ready Iowa websites, as well as public service announcements. Follow HSEMD and NWS on social media using the hashtag #IASWAW.
